Pop Tab Recycling Programme is Not an Urban Myth

Back in 1989, this programme was initiated by Jack Baumber and Raymond Pearse of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 229, in Elora, ON.

The co-chairmen approached the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) in Guelph and an agreement was reached for Alcan to purchase tabs from pop cans at the going rate of metal (which fluctuates with the economy).

By the end of 1989, the programme had raised enough money to purchase one wheelchair. By August 2003, a total of 520 wheelchairs had been purchased for those who needed one... and it just keep growing!

The programme will make up the difference in the cost of the equipment between what is covered by the governement and what is expected to be paid by the user. A written request with a letter of recommendation from your doctor/therapist as to your requirements and measurements is needed. Your name will go on a waiting list and you will be contacted when funds become available.

Approximately 1000 tabs makes a pound. A wheeelchair cost approximately two tons of tabs!

If you have tab donations, please check with your local Legion to see if they are involved with the Pop Tab Recycling Programme. There may be other drop off areas in your community. You can contact Jack Baumer at (519) 846-9611 or (519) 846-5563. Sheldon MacLean is another contact at (905) 277-2902 or (905) 279-9798.
