Breast Health Access for Women with Disabilities
Breast Health Access for Women with Disabilities is a community partnership of women with disabilities, breast cancer survivors, medical professionals and grassroots disability rights organizations. BHAWD provides:

an accessible clinic for breast exams, self-breast exam education and training, and referral for a mammogram, if appropriate;

an accessible mammography facility;

educational outreach to women with disabilities regarding their rights to breast health management and accessible health services;

educational outreach to personal assistants about how to work with women with disabilities to help them get adequate health care;

technical assistance and health care provider training program in which segments of the model can be replicated. Includes a variety of training components to multidisciplinary health care teams

Mammography training especially designed for Mammography Technologists on how to provide mammography for women with disabilities. ASRT credited training module.
- Publications- First of its kind educational tools designed for Medical Providers- Clinical Protocols adapted for women with disabilities, include Clinical Breast examination, Mammography, and Breast Self- Examination; Provider Guide- Breast Health and Beyond for Women with Disabilities: A Provider's Guide to the Examination and Screening for Women with Disabilities;
Brochure- Breast Self- Examination A New Approach Especially modified for women with physical or sensory limitations. - Mammography Accessibility Assessment- Pilot Project to assess mammography accessibility and integrate universal accessibility features into mammography facility's services.
Women with disabilities are equal partners in all aspects and stages of project planning, implementation, and ongoing development of our initiative s.. With their input, as well as from focus groups, task forces and a wide representation of committee members in several BHAWD committees , BHAWD is creating culturally competent programs that address the health needs of women with disabilities. With their input BHAWD is creating consumer driven, culturally competent programs. BHAWD maintains a commitment to consumer direction and to enhancing the ability of women with disabilities to take control of their own lives.
