People with spinal cord injuries can expect to live as long as the general population, but face several challenges to maintaining optimal levels of health and quality of life.

Although the field of spinal cord injury rehabilitation has made several advances, we are still only at the beginning of understanding what it means to live long term with spinal cord injury.

In addition to contending with secondary health conditions, such as pressure ulcers and urinary tract infections, people with spinal cord injury may experience typical age-related conditions such as heart disease or cancer. A key challenge facing health professionals and patients alike is understanding whether changes in health are due to aging, spinal cord injury or the comination of both
