My First Blog - Woo-hoo!

Ann Kennedy's picture

How many people does it take to come up with an opening line for a blog? In my case, 3 and I consider myself a writer! You see, I may be young-at-heart but I admit I’m old enough that the ‘new’ language springing out of the hi-tech age has me stymied. (Does anyone use that word any more?). I can’t figure what’s blue about Blu-Ray, I don’t know whether the newest version of the cell phone begins with “I” or “Eye”, and the word “blog” alone conjures images of something my dog produces when he barks too heartily. However, I’m totally hooked on reading “Status Updates” on Facebook and I think the Shazam App on the aforementioned new cell phone is brilliant.

So—welcome to the CPA Ontario ‘Members Only’ community, and My First Blog! In the coming months, I’ll be posting about my own life-long experiences living with Spina Bifida, asking you to share your experiences living or working with disability, discussing my ideas for the Membership Program and collecting your input.

I’m excited to introduce you to our multi-media store where we’ve done the searching for you to find books, DVDs and other products available through Amazon.ca that might have relevance for you. The CPA Ontario customized online store will not only save you time, but also gives you a discount on all purchases.

Finally, you’ll find the most up-to-date information about upcoming activities across the province.

Being at the helm of the Membership Program for CPA Ontario for 3 years now, I recognize that our membership includes a vast cross-section of characters from about 16 to 86. You are men and women with a common investment in Spinal Cord Injury or other physical disabilities whether living with it personally, friends or family, students, support workers, therapists, doctors, nurses, lawyers, other organizations and even heads of corporations. Let me tell you, it’s a challenge to address the needs of such a varied audience, and that’s one of the reasons for setting up this online Members Only community! Not only will it offer access to experts that can assist you with health and lifestyle tips, I also invite members who write their own blog currently (or would like to start) to let me know, and we’ll set you up!

So, if you’re reading this I’d appreciate you telling someone about it so we can build a community of lived experience, sharing and learning together!

Hi, Nancy:

I agree--it's like having an online diary to write, at work no less! Everyone, feel free to contribute any thoughts, suggestions, questions, concerns...this is your opportunity to speak up about what you expect out of your Membership Program. Pass the word!

Being a relativily newcomer to a wheel chair, I have found some of the key supports are so bound up in themselves- months and months can pass without real help. Access to rehabilition, health care and legal help is arduous for anyone under quite a bit of physical, mental and financial pressures. Is it just me or are a lot of people just going through the motions while our needs & emotions are on high alert ?
One thing I have found strange is that some law firms are working both sides of the street- for the insurers and us. Is that ethical?
